How much do Wedding Photographers cost in Hampshire?

Hopefully you’re here because you are curious about how much wedding photographers cost in Hampshire!

You may have just got engaged, been engaged for a while or you’re just curious about all things weddings!

This blog should give you a better understanding of wedding photographer prices, why they cost what they do and how to use this information for your wedding. As a wedding photographer of 8 years, currently based in Hampshire but having lived & been based in Cornwall too, I have all of the top tips and secrets you need to know!

How much do you need to budget for your wedding photographers cost in Hampshire?

The overall question is, how much do wedding photographers cost in Hampshire and how much do I need to budget. Although this is going to be completely individual to you and your wedding, I am here to give you a bit more of an idea of what to expect.

When it comes to wedding planning, the best way to start is to set a budget. As boring as this first step is, it is beyond necessary! You can do something like what I did when my wife and I got married. We set our desired budget and then we had another figure that was our ‘if it means we get everything we want and don’t have to make sacrifices’ budget. Only you will know what you can afford and what is realistic for you and your day.

Another starting point is to set your priorities:

  • What’s your budget?
  • What parts of the day are important to you?
  • Are you going to have a big or small wedding?
  • How important is photography to you?

Obviously as a wedding photographer in Hampshire myself, I am going to say wedding photography is VERY important. Not just because it is my job. But because I put a lot of importance on photographs. From my childhood, to the era of my life now and back in time when my parents were growing up.

You might feel exactly the same, but you also might see photography as necessary for only part of your day. Both of these are OKAY!

Here’s the prices…

After doing my own research into 20+ photographers around Hampshire, taking into account myself also, the rough range of full day wedding photography is between £1500-£3000.

Which is quite a range!

You have to take into account that these will all include around 9-10 hours of coverage. Some might include second photographers, albums, online galleries and/or next day previews.

The average price in the UK for full day wedding photography is £2024.*

How do you pick the right photographer?

This is all about matching your vibe, personality and feeling to the right one. As well as someone who fits your budget.

This is the order in which I would start choosing someone to photograph your wedding:

  • Decide roughly how much you would like to spend – With this, it is definitely worth having a bit of flexibility. You don’t want to rule someone out because they are slightly out of your initial budget even though they tick every other box!
  • Research! – Search on google, have a look on websites, social media. Do they share lots of their work, can you see who they are, have they got reviews.
  • Reach out to the photographers you’ve shortlisted – book in a call, get to know them. Ask them any questions and ask to see full galleries! This is a must in todays crazy world of AI. You want to see real people, real wedding days from start to finish. Maybe even a review to match the gallery if you want to be extra vigilant.
  • Do a Pros & Cons list – I love a pros and cons list. I think it is a great way to see who stands out. Or write your priorities on one side and the photographers along the top and tick which priorities they meet. E.g you get on, they match your personality, they fit or are close to the budget.

Next…

Hopefully by this point you will have your stand out photographer! Don’t worry if they are slightly out of budget. Once the dust settles after your wedding day, one of the only things you have left to remind you of the feelings, the moments and the memories will be your photographs. In my opinion, if anything is worth spending a little extra on it’s that! They are also one of your suppliers that will be with you for the longest, so you need to like them!

Smaller wedding or eloping? How much will that cost?

This will almost always cost less than a full day wedding. I say ‘almost always’ just because sometimes some elopements can be more secluded, out of the way destinations so can incur travel costs.

But like I said the majority of the time they will be cheaper. A wedding photographer costs in Hampshire between £150-£300 an hour. So a half day package for a smaller wedding is likely to be around half that of a full day wedding. There is a chance that it will cost a little over half the price because it doesn’t necessarily result in half the work for the photographer.

Elopements are very similar. Although these are likely to be around the cost of a half day wedding, there are a lot more factors based on what your elopement looks like.

For example, I charge £1999 for a full day wedding photography package. My half day wedding package is £1099 and I will often refer elopements to the same pricing structure. Elopements can involve a small number of guests but can also be just the couple.

In these cases it may mean you only need a couple of hours of photography. In which case it is slightly less cost again. However Elopements typically have more time for adventuring and getting more unique moment based photos. E.g exploring the local area and getting drinks or adventuring along the coast. These can need more time and therefore more cost.

Common Questions regarding wedding photographers costs in Hampshire

Should I book slightly more time than I need or just enough?

Personally, I always suggest booking slightly more. Something I always say is that you will never regret having me there for too long but you might regret not having me there long enough! Ultimately, you can’t go back so I know that I would rather have my wedding photographer there for longer. And I did exactly that. When I booked my wedding photographer, I initially booked her for 8 hours. As I got closer to the day I knew I might miss out on little bits in the morning or more of the evening; so I booked her for an extra 2 hours and I am so glad I did!

What’s usually included in the price?

You will typically get the set hours that are listed in the specific package you are enquiring about. This will also normally include a pre wedding meeting, edited digital images and some form of online gallery. Sometimes there will be other extras either included or for an additional price like second photographers, albums, pre-wedding photoshoots and next day previews.

For example in my full day wedding photography package, I include:

  • 10 hours of photography
  • All photos in High Resolution & Web size
  • A private online gallery for you and your guests
  • Next day sneak peek previews
  • An online wedding photo slideshow

A good wedding photographer will always be transparent with what is included and what isn’t. There shouldn’t be any hidden fees but definitely ask more questions if you are concerned.

Why do wedding photographers cost so much?

The part of the wedding photographers job that everyone sees in the 6, 8, 10 or 12 hours of work they do on the day of the wedding. Which you might think, ‘wow they get paid a lot per hour!’

But the bits you don’t see are the hours of admin before the day sending emails, building quotes and invoices, meetings and calls beforehand. And after, around 20-40 hours of editing per wedding gallery. So in some cases it can work out around 60 hours associated with one wedding day which is a much lower hourly cost than you might’ve initially thought.

As well as this you get their experience and knowledge which is invaluable. Someone on your team on the day who knows how to deal with most situations good and bad, and is there for you as a couple.

Plus all of the boring but vitally important bits and pieces behind the scenes like insurance costs, equipment, editing software and all other business costs.
